Don’t Forget to Turn Your Clocks Back, Check Smoke Alarms

As Loudoun residents join most people across the country and turn their clocks back one hour on Sunday, Nov. 3, the Loudoun Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management will be encouraging residents to check their smoke detectors, too.

Each spring and fall when the time changes, Loudoun Fire & Rescue reminds residents to test smoke alarms and check their batteries.

“Smoke alarms are the first line of defense in alerting a person to the dangers of smoke and fire,” said Loudoun Fire Chief W. Keith Brower Jr. “Therefore, it is critical that these life-saving devices are checked and tested frequently to ensure proper functioning.” 

According to Loudoun Fire & Rescue: Smoke alarms should be tested monthly and always maintained in tip-top condition. Check the manufacturer’s expiration date and specifications on the label, replace the batteries if needed and clean dust away so that smoke can enter freely. Whether hardwired or battery driven, all smoke alarms should be replaced completely every ten years. These simple steps will help ensure that you and your family will have the best chance of surviving if fire should strike.

Loudoun County Fire and Rescue’s “Put a Finger on It” campaign offers free home safety inspections and smoke alarms to all Loudoun County residents. The department replaces broken or outdated alarms and replaces them with battery-powered alarms at no cost.
