Extreme Heat Warning Issued In VA, Will Feel Like 110 Degrees

It's going to be miserably hot this week, with warnings issued. Here's when the heat wave will end and when Virginia can expect storms.

Dangerous heat and humidity is expected in the Washington, D.C., region Monday with high temperatures approaching 100 degrees in the forecast, the National Weather Service said. Across much of Northern and central Virginia, the dangerous heat and humidity will make it feel like 110 degrees outdoors.

The summer blast-furnace has prompted warnings from the National Weather Service: An extreme heat warning is in effect from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday and will again be in place from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Both days the NWS said heat index values up to 110 expected amid "dangerously hot conditions."

"Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events," the Weather Service said. "Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes."

Areas included in the extreme heat warning are: the District of Columbia, Fairfax, Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, Manassas and Manassas Park.

Chances for showers and thunderstorms arrive late Wednesday and extend through the weekend. By the end of the week, storms will knock high temperatures down to the upper 80s and low 90.

The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang said an extreme heat watch may be issued for Wednesday also, with humidity making it feel like 115 degrees.

"Limit time outdoors — near-record highs today," the Post said. "Skies are a bit hazy, but it’s overall sunny. Any stray shower or storm would be very brief. Adding in dew points around 70 to 75, it may feel like 105 to 115 degrees to our skin as sweat evaporation can no longer cool us. Minimize outdoor time, avoid strenuous activity, hydrate and use sunblock."

Temperatures in at least three dozen states will be subjected to blistering heat, according to AccuWeather.

As temperatures traditionally drop at night, the private forecast service advised hot summer days could become hot summer nights along the East Coast.
