STERLING, VA — An electrical fire involving a transformer explosion caused damage to homes and storage buildings in Sterling on New Year's Eve, according to Loudoun County Fire and Rescue.

The fire department said it responded to the 1900 block of N. Amelia Street for a shed fire that spread to power lines and a transformer. The explosion happened on a transformer connected to the power pole. Firefighters were able to put out the fire, and there were no injuries.

A fire marshal's office investigation found the fire was caused by a failing electrical duplex outlet. The fire involved three outdoor storage buildings and caused vinyl siding to melt on two single-family houses. Damages were estimated to be $100, and there were no residents displaced.
