Free Pet Adoption Event Comes To Loudoun County Animal Shelter

The Loudoun County Animal Shelter will host a free adoption event as animals spend more and more time at the shelter.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — A free pet adoption event is coming to the Loudoun County Animal Shelter on Saturday. Officials said they decided to drop adoption fees as animals spend more and more time without getting adopted.

The "Homeward Bound" event will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday at the shelter on Adoption Drive in Leesburg. Adoption fees will be waived for all cats, dogs, small pets, and reptiles.

Melissa Heard is the operations manager for the animal shelter.

"The average amount of time it takes an animal to get adopted is continuing to increase," Heard said. "For example, Sheila the dog has been waiting for over 100 days, while Dolly and Miley the cats have been waiting for over 180 days for a family to come adopt them. We know their future families are out there and we’re hopeful that this event may help find them the loving homes that they have been waiting months for."

Any dog or cat adopted from the shelter will be spayed or neutered and have up-to-date vaccinations. Animals adopted from the shelter will also receive a microchip. The animal shelter said it will also give adopters a goodie bag with supplies to help their new animal feel at home.
