The race for the Democratic nomination for the commonwealth's attorney is the only county-wide race that will be on every ballot.

Incumbent Buta Biberaj fought off a challenge from Elizabeth Lancaster, who has worked as a public defender.

Biberaj will face Republican Bob Anderson in the general election in November.

There are also three Democratic primary races in the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates for some Loudoun residents.

In the 31st Virginia Senate district, which encompasses most of Leesburg and western Loudoun, Russet Perry ran against Zachary Cummings. Perry will face Republican Juan Pablo Segura in November.

In the 32nd Virginia Senate District, Suhas Subramanyam looked to receive the Democratic nomination in a race against Ibraheem Samirah. Both candidates have served on the Virginia House of Delegates in the past. The 32nd district encompasses Ashburn and Sterling.

The Associated Press called the race for Subramanyam on Tuesday night. Subramanyam will run against Greg Moulthrop in the general election.

In the 26th district of the House of Delegates, Sirisha Kompalli is running against Kannan Srinivasan. Srinivasan secured the nomination on Tuesday, the Associated Press said. Srinivasan will square off against Republican Rafi Khaja in November.

On Tuesday, voters told Patch that they had several reasons for voting in local primary elections. Several voters noted concerns about safety, schools, and protecting a woman's right to an abortion.

In their last update at 4 p.m., the Loudoun County Office of Elections said 10.54 percent of registered voters had cast their ballots in person or through mail-in ballots.

Other voters said they just wanted to support solid leadership from elected officials they can trust.

"Four years ago, Loudoun County made history by electing the first Democratic Commonwealth’s Attorney in 24 years. We have made major progress over those four years, turning around an outdated system that was costing taxpayers money, failing to provide necessary resources to victims and not making us safer," Biberaj said in a statement on Tuesday night. "We’ve brought progress to Loudoun over the past 4 years, doubling the number of Special Victims Unit attorneys to support domestic violence and sexual assault victims, expanding programs for mental health and veterans, and bringing a smarter approach to justice that saved our taxpayers millions of dollars."

In her statement, Biberaj also noted that her opponent in the general election, Bob Anderson, ran the office of the commonwealth's attorney in the 90s.

"He wants to bring back the old way of doing things that cost taxpayers money and failed to provide the services we need," Biberaj said. "This election is a choice between going back to the past on criminal justice, or continuing to build on the progress we’ve made since 2019."
