Loudoun County Special Elections: What To Know After Snow
Two special elections are being held Tuesday in parts of Loudoun County after a winter storm sweeps through the region.

ASHBURN, VA — Loudoun County is preparing to hold two special elections Tuesday, one day after a winter storm that is bringing snow accumulation, travel impacts and closures to the region.
As of Monday, The Loudoun County Office of Election's website says it is monitoring the weather forecast and pans to have streets and sidewalks at participating polling places ready for voters Tuesday. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7. An acceptable form of ID is required to vote in person.
Loudoun County officials had encouraged voters to vote early on Saturday, the last day of voting. The three early voting sites in Leesburg, Sterling and South Riding had a combined 4,254 voters on Saturday, according to the election office.

Voters in parts of Loudoun County will vote in the 32nd Virginia Senate District, 26th Virginia House of Delegates District, or both. The 32nd Senate District special election was sought as current state Sen. Suhas Subramanyam was elected to succeed Rep. Jennifer Wexton in the 10th Congressional District. Del. Kannan Srinivasan is the Democratic candidate facing Republican Tumay Harding.

With Srinivasan chosen as the Democratic candidate in the 32nd District race, he resigned from his 26th House District seat. That resulted in another special election. Democrats chose JJ Singh as the nominee, while Republicans chose Ram Venkatachalam to run.
According to the Washington Post, a win for Republicans in the 32nd District would take the majority from the Democrats in the Senate, which currently stands at 21-19. If Republicans flip the seat, the parties would have the same number of seats, but Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears could provide a tie-breaking vote.
As for the House, the Democratic majority of 51-49 could turn into a tie if Republicans flip the 26th District seat. The Washington Post believes the parties would need a power-sharing agreement if that happened.
The 32nd district is labeled as strong Democratic by the Virginia Public Access project and includes part of Loudoun County south of Route 7 like Ashburn, Brambleton, South Riding and Sterling. The 26th House District is labeled as strong Democratic by the Virginia Public Access Project and covers neighborhoods like Brambleton and South Riding in the southeastern part of the county.
The special elections are only open to registered voters within the districts. The voter registration deadline was Dec. 31, but same-day registration is available through Election Day. Residents can check their registration status and polling place through the Virginia Department of Elections.
