Polls In Loudoun County To Be Monitored By Feds For Voting Rights Compliance

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — Loudoun County will be one of the locations federal authorities will check for voting rights compliance on Election Day.

The Justice Department will enforce federal voting rights laws that protect the right to vote for eligible citizens. Staff will be deployed to 86 jurisdictions in 27 states to ensure polling places are complying with federal civil rights laws. The department regularly deploys its staff to monitor for compliance with federal civil rights laws in elections in communities all across the country.

In Virginia, Loudoun County is one of those monitored communities. Other Virginia localities that will be monitored by the Justice Department are the City of Manassas, City of Manassas Park, Prince William County, Hanover County and Henrico County.

The monitors will include staff from the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, other department divisions, U.S. Attorney’s Offices and federal observers from the Office of Personnel Management. Among the federal laws being enforced are the Voting Rights Act, National Voter Registration Act, Help America Vote Act, Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act and Civil Rights Acts. The division’s Disability Rights Section also enforces the Americans with Disabilities Act to ensure people with disabilities have equal opportunity to vote. The Criminal Section enforces federal criminal statutes that ban voter intimidation and voter suppression based on race, color, national origin or religion.

Staff will be in contact with state and election officials throughout Election Day.
