Founder Noah Dan, who spent his childhood in Italy, started Pitango Gelato in 2007. The business set up a farm in Baltimore County, Maryland to provide fresh milk for its gelato, and its sorbets based on fresh fruit are also produced on the farm. The shop's products are free from artificial food colorings, flavors and preservatives.
The first franchised Pitango Gelato was opened in 2023 at 115 S. Union St. in Alexandria. Franchisees Sam and Semy Lee found success at the location and made a development agreement to open two more Northern Virginia locations. Gurrapu and Jaka are the second group of franchisees for the business.
While Loudoun County has numerous ice cream shops, there are few shops serving the more dense gelato. Gogo's Italian Gelato is located in downtown Leesburg, and Fantasticks serves up its gelato pops in a kiosk at One Loudoun in Ashburn.
