Rabid Cat Had Contact With People At Ashburn Shopping Center
A rabid cat had contact with at least five people outside an Ashburn shopping center, the Loudoun health department reported.

ASHBURN, VA — A rabid cat may have exposed several people to Rabies at an Ashburn shopping center in recent weeks, the Loudoun County Health Department said.
Health department officials said at least five people had contact with the cat last week near the Chick-fil-A and Red Robin on Yukon Drive. The cat was also seen at the Shoppes at Ryan Park.
The rabid cat was a brown and gray tabby that was aggressive and had tremors, authorities said. The cat also had three kittens, two light orange and one dark gray.

The rabies virus affects an animal's central nervous system. It is most often spread through the bite of an infected animal. The virus can affect all mammals, including humans.
"Residents are encouraged to avoid contact with unattended animals to minimize the risk of bites or disease," the Loudoun County Health Department said.
If a human doesn't receive treatment before rabies symptoms start, the virus can be fatal, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
