Severe Thunderstorm Threat With Damaging Winds, Hail Returns To NoVA
If severe storms materialize in NoVA, the National Weather Service says damaging winds, hail and isolated flooding are the main threats.
VIRGINIA — Another chance of severe thunderstorms will affect Northern Virginia and the rest of the DC region Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters call for scattered to numerous thunderstorms Thursday evening. A few storms could turn severe, bringing threats of damaging wind gusts, hail and isolated flooding. Residents near waterways should note severe storms can produce hazardous winds and waves.
The National Weather Service expected showers to start Thursday morning, and a second round of showers and thunderstorms could arrive in the late afternoon into the night.

The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang attributed severe storms to a cold front coming from the west. Forecasters expect storms to become more widespread closer to the evening, as well as an isolated severe storm with strong winds and hail.
Thunderstorm chances will continue into the Memorial Day weekend, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Forecasters say a few severe thunderstorms are possible Saturday, while "a more organized severe weather threat" could happen Monday.

The Capital Weather Gang says timing of precipitation is "still uncertain" for the holiday weekend. However, forecasters expect Friday and Sunday to be the days the region most likely evades rain.
Here is the D.C. area forecast for the days ahead:
Thursday: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 2 p.m., then isolated thunderstorms after 5 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 84. At night, showers and thunderstorms are likely along with patchy fog between midnight and 2 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 67. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent.
Friday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 5 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. At night, partly cloudy, with a low around 67.
Saturday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 84. At night, a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m., then a slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. The chance of precipitation is 50 percent.
Sunday: A chance of showers after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 85. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. At night, a chance of showers and mostly cloudy, with a low around 67. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.
Monday, Memorial Day: Showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. At night, showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 63. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.
