Study: Virginia Home to Fastest Internet In the U.S.

With an average speed of 13.7 megabits per second, Virginia has the fastest broadband Internet in the U.S.

Online shopaholics and Netflix lovers rejoice: Virginia is home to the fastest internet in the U.S.

That’s according to Akamai Technologies, a content-delivery service provider that ranked all 50 states based on their average Internet connection speeds in the company’s quarterly ”State Of The Internet” report. Virginia tops the list with an average connection speed of 13.7 megabits per second (Mbps).

According to Akamai, the 26 states with speeds greater than 10 Mbps are classified as “high broadband” states. No states were classified as “low broadband,” which is an average speed of less than 4 Mbps.

Delaware and Massachusetts tied for second at 13.1 Mbps while Rhode Island and the District of Columbia round out the top five with average speeds of 12.9 and 12.8 Mbps, respectively. Alaska came in last place with 7 Mbps.

Broadview’s findings revealed that Midwestern and Southern states fared worse than the Northeast and West Coast in average Internet speed. Average connection speeds can vary by region.

Akamai’s report also gauged Internet speeds around the world. South Korea had the fastest Internet service of any country with an average of 23.6 Mbps, followed by Japan with an average of 14.6 Mbps. The United States ranked No. 10 with an average speed of 10.5 Mbps.
