Here are the top three stories in Blacksburg today:

  1. Virginia Tech honored the annual "Denim Day" on Apr. 26, an international movement aimed at raising awareness of sexual violence and the common misconceptions surrounding sexual violence. Hokie Wellness' Sexual Violence Prevention Specialist Chelsea Clearly said of the day, "It helps to continue to have these really hard conservations about these misconceptions around sexual violence. Elevating what is consent, and what is not consent, and being able to bring the community in on the conversation. So that way we can continue to build a community around consent." (WFXRtv.com)
  2. The YMCA at Virginia Tech will be hosting this year's Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, Apr. 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the field and tennis courts on Washington Street. Organizers said that the purpose of the event every year is to help encourage children to learn more about their health and develop the mindset for a healthy life now that will help them grow into healthy adults. The event will include a Fun Run, a Fabulous 4Miler, and other activities such as field games and face painting. (WDBJ)
  3. A new study from scientists at Virginia Tech that was recently published in the Journal of Geophysical Research shows that some areas of the Chesapeake Bay are sinking upwards of a quarter of an inch a year. The scientists also found that authorities in the area are not using that information to determine flooding risk on official planning maps. Regarding the outcome of the research, the scientists said that coastal communities will need to adapt to both rising sea levels and eroding coastlines, and there is not a single one-size-fits-all for how to do so.
