Residents are able to manage their budget with confidence and enjoy a worry-free lifestyle in retirement.

For Colleen and Tom Griffin, moving to Greenspring, an Erickson Senior Living community in Springfield, Va., has proved to be a wise financial decision--especially after they experienced increasing maintenance costs for their old house in Kingstown, Va.

"Not only do we no longer worry about maintaining our home, but we also have fewer bills to pay," says Colleen. "And thanks to the 90% refundable entrance fee*, we know we will have something to leave our three children."

Now, the Griffins are able to manage their budget with confidence and enjoy a worry-free lifestyle in retirement!

Predictable expenses

Greenspring residents no longer have to worry about maintenance and repairs thanks to the monthly service package, which bundles everyday costs into one predictable bill. It also covers all utilities, a meal plan at on-site restaurants, access to amenities, regularly scheduled transportation, and more.

"I really appreciate no longer worrying about unexpected maintenance, which tends to be frequent when you live in a house as long as we did," says Colleen. "Over time, those things really start to add up."

She adds, "Although I had enjoyed cooking when our family was young, cooking, shopping, and cleaning were becoming burdensome. I was ready to retire from cooking daily meals, and Tom was ready to stop daily kitchen duty."

Like Colleen, more than 90% of seniors want predictable monthly expenses to cover most of their daily activities, meals, and housing--according to a recent survey commissioned by Erickson Senior Living via Edge Research. The monthly service package Greenspring offers helps residents achieve this goal.

"The monthly service package is very helpful," she notes. "It makes budgeting much easier. We know what we are going to spend, and that stays consistent [throughout the year]."

Peace of mind

Many residents also appreciate the 90% refundable entrance fee--the heart of Greenspring's pricing structure. The entrance fee, collected as part of the residency process, will go back to you or your beneficiaries, if or when you leave the community.

For the Griffins, the 90% refundable entrance fee was a real draw.

"For several years, Tom and I thought about moving to a smaller, one-story house or apartment because the stairs became problematic," recalls Colleen. "Friends told us about life in active adult communities, but our hesitation came from the belief that we couldn't afford to do so, or, if we did, we would not leave an inheritance to our children."

She continues, "But once the 90% refundable entrance fee was explained to us, we were convinced that moving to Greenspring could be a good move for us."

So much to gain

Since settling into their maintenance-free, one-level residence, Colleen and Tom have gained more free time to pursue their hobbies and interests.

Tom recently joined the Troubadours, a group that enjoys singing classic country and folk songs. Colleen joined the Quilt, Stitch, and Chat group and participates in stability and step exercise classes at the fitness center--at no additional cost.

"There is so much to do, and everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Because we are all at the same stage in life, it makes making friends so easy," says Colleen. "When we lived in our former community, we were among people of all ages. It wasn't as easy to make meaningful connections."

"Our residents really find value in how much their lives have improved, compared to staying in older houses that may have become increasingly worrisome," says Sales Director Franklin Funes. "What's more, by continuously evaluating and investing in our services and amenities, we ensure an engaging future for all of our residents."

This forward-thinking approach not only enhances residents' quality of life but also ensures the vitality of the entire community. Over the last several years, Greenspring has updated all three clubhouses on campus and added a new restaurant and pickleball court.

‘Home for life'

Most of all, the Griffins relish the peace of mind that comes from the Home for Life promise* and the Benevolent Care Fund.

No one ever expects to run out of money, but sometimes unforeseen issues arise that can quickly deplete your hard-earned savings and put you at risk. At Greenspring, we've planned for life's uncertainties and are prepared to assist eligible residents who outlive their resources. No one will be asked to leave the community because of a genuine inability to pay.

Every year, employees, residents, and their loved ones contribute thousands of dollars to the Benevolent Care Fund. These generous donations strengthen our ability to provide a home for life to residents who experience genuine financial hardship.

"The Benevolent Care Fund absolutely provides financial peace of mind," says Colleen. "We've found that we no longer worry about our finances. We have a home for life."

She adds, "All three of our children have visited us at Greenspring. They're delighted with our move--and the peace of mind it gives us all!"
