New Books Will Help Students Keep Reading This Summer

Recently, members of Assistance League of Northern Virginia gathered to pack new books for students to read over the summer as part of its Literacy for Kids program. Some books were intended for schools' Little Libraries and some for their youngest kids. Assistance League volunteers packed 3402 books for the Little Libraries at eight Title I schools in Fairfax and Prince William Counties and the City of Alexandria, with sets of books for June, July, and August, so that the libraries would have a good supply of new books to offer their students each month.

The nonprofit also provided about 1200 books for Pre-K, Head Start, and Special Education-Pre-K students at seven schools for their summer reading. These books, which were purchased with funds from Social4Good, a community nonprofit, were packaged in bags that held three classic books for young readers. It is hoped that having a new book to read each month will spark a love of reading for these students.

Assistance League has a strong commitment to education and it recognizes the importance of good reading skills for students’ success. The nonprofit hopes these books will help the Pre-K and elementary school students develop a love of reading that inspires their imagination and creativity.
