Star Athlete: Burke Soccer Player Shares American Ideal Of Equality

BURKE, VA — We all know student athletes who also bring their A-game to other parts of their lives.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know the individual stories behind the leaderboard.

This submission comes from Corazon Sandoval Foley, who nominated Daniel of Burke. Daniel and his sister Ciara (also an athlete) won the first-ever competition by Gov. Ralph Northam for students to submit historical marker nominations honoring Asian American History in Virginia.

Why do you believe the star student athlete should be recognized?

Daniel and his sister Ciara (also an athlete) won the first-ever competition by Gov. Ralph Northam for students to submit historical marker nominations honoring Asian American History in Virginia. Daniel and his sister won with their historical marker honoring Filipinos in the US Navy that was installed by the State of Virginia in May 2022 at Virginia Beach, Hampton Roads, Virginia.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star student athlete?

Daniel (and his sister Ciara) are both very kind and good souls, respectful toward their parents and grandparents and everyone in our community (sharing the American ideal of equality of human beings). Their community contribution is important because sharing accurate history (in this case about Filipinos in the US Navy) strengthens American patriotism and community understanding, including in our hometown of Burke.
