'Thrift Shop' Parody Goes Viral, Shakespeare Abridged, Sign Language Workshop

Five things you need to know in Burke today.

Here are some stories you may have missed and some events to keep in mind on Thursday.

  1. A group of swimmers from the Ravensworth Farm neighborhood in Springfield created a parody of rapper Macklemore’s popular song “Thrift Shop”. The video, originally created for the Ravensworth Ravens swim team's award banquet, has since gone viral. It currently has more than 2,000 views.
  2. Braddock District Supervisor John Cook's Braddock Beacon for August is now available online through the Braddock District website.
  3. Did you know August is one of the most dangerous months for drivers? It's true, according to a new report. Motorists should be especially careful on Tuesdays.
  4. The Burke Centre Library has an "I Dig Sign Language" workshop open to children of all ages Thursday at 2:30 p.m. The event is cosponsored by the Friends of the George Mason Regional Library. 
  5. The Flying Muskrat Theatre Company will have its final two performances of the summer season on Friday, Aug. 9 and Saturday, Aug. 10. The group will perform “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [Revised]". Tickets are $12 at the door.
