How to Keep Your Halloween "Fun" Scary and Not like, For-Real Scary

Make great memories on Halloween and not scary ones.

Halloween is one of the most joyous days of the year for children, coming in well after Christmas and a close second to birthdays. Keep it that way by remembering these safety tips from Amica Insurance and the National Fire Protection Association

Costume Safety

  • Be sure all swords, knives and other "weaponry" on costumes are short and flexible and not sharp.
  • Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags so motorists can spot Trick-or-Treaters.
  • Make sure costumes with masks have eye holes that are large enough for the child to see.

Fire Safety

  • Keep decorations out of a home's paths of egress
  • Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper are very flammable.  Keep these type of decorations well away from all open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs, fire places and heaters.
  • Avoid using candles to light Jack-O-Lanterns, but if you do, use caution. Flashlights or battery-operated candles are better.
  • Place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far away from trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways and grass.
  • Keep children away from open flames and make sure they know how to stop, drop and roll if they come into contact with fire.
Candy Safety

Inspect all candy and discard any with open wrappers and any pieces that look like they were tampered with.

Don't eat it all at once and eat it slowly.

Research the ingredients of treats to make sure they don't contain any known allergens that affect the people in your family.
