UPDATE: The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) reopened a portion of Interstate 66 in Centreville on Wednesday night, Sept. 18, that had been closed for the evening rush hour after a vehicle struck an overhead gantry.

The collision damaged the gantry, which held directional signs over the highway, and made it unstable. At about 5 p.m., VDOT and the Virginia State Police shut down the three eastbound lanes on I-66 from Lee Highway (Route 29) in Centreville to the Fairfax County Parkway.

Eastbound I-66 traffic was diverted onto Route 29, bringing even more rush-hour congestion to Centreville than usual.
