Landslide Victory for Centreville Over Chantilly

Chargers lose to Wildcats 47-28

The Chantilly Chargers' much-anticipated rematch against the Centreville Wildcats on Thursday night had a very different ending then the the two teams played against each other.

Just three weeks ago, the Chargers edged past the Wildcats for a 56-50 win, with the two teams fighting hard for control of the ball in the fourth quarter. But in the fourth quarter Thursday night, it was no contest. The Wildcats dominated the court during the second half of the game, sailing to a 47-28 victory over their opponent.

Assistant Coach Sharron Wooden's frustration was evident after the game. "We got outworked, out-toughed, and we know better," she said.

"When we couldn't make our shots, we stopped playing defense," Wooden said.

Chantilly sustained a blow early in the game when junior guard Lauren Yates had an injury. But at the half, the Chargers trailed by only five points. By the end of the third quarter, things had gone rapidly downhill. The score was 30-18 in the Wildcats' favor. All in all, Centreville Coach Wally Horton had good reason to be pleased with the Centreville girls' performance.

"The first time we played them we didn't respond well to their trap defense. This time we did pretty well," Horton said.

Horton noted that during Thursday's game, there were only 10 turnovers. Last time, there were at least twice as many, he said.

"It was a big win for us," he said.

It was also a particularly big night for Erin Meador, whose 26 points and 13 rebounds  were a high note in Centreville's performance throughout the evening.
