Staying Fit This Holiday Season

Prevent holiday weight gain and stay healthy through the new year with this food and fitness advice for Washingtonians!

We all know the holidays are a time of indulgence. Work parties, holiday gatherings, family get-togethers, and numerous occasions to imbibe make it particularly taxing on our overall health and wellbeing. Luckily, there are a number of ways to stay on track and make good choices to avoid that predictable December weight gain.

Fill up on Veggies.

Luckily for us, there are Sweetgreens a'plenty in the DC area and there are numerous vegetable-heavy offerings on their menu. Opt for a healthy salad at lunchtime and those evening treats will be slightly less deleterious.

Start a New Training Program.

It's easy to get into a rut. Consider working with a new person trainer or signing up for new fitness classes at the gym. Apps like ClassPass make it easy to sign up for studios through Georgetown and you can try a new type of class each week. Sports conditioning programs like Project Athlete are a great option for the younger set to rev up their own training or hit fitness goals in the new year.

Alternate Water and Booze.

If you find yourself drinking more heavily throughout the holiday season, you're not alone. It's common to find yourself at holiday happy hours, work celebrations, and friendly gatherings more than ever during this time of year. To cut back on calories and keep a clear head, alternate alcoholic beverages with a glass of water. You'll thank yourself tomorrow.

You can avoid the holiday weight gain and lethargy by following the tips above and making a concerted effort to maintain healthy habits through the New Year.
