Dale City Shooting Ruled As Self-Defense, No Charges: Police

DALE CITY, VA — After conducting an investigation that concluded a shooting was in self-defense, the Prince William County Police Department does not plan to file charges against a Dale City homeowner who shot an intruder on July 6, the department said Friday.

The shooting, which occurred in the 4300 block of Glendale Road, was investigated by detectives with the department’s Violent Crimes Unit.

“After consultation with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, the shooting was determined to be in self-defense and therefore no charges were placed against the homeowner,” the Prince William County police said.

The department’s announcement comes a day after a 44-year-old woman shot and killed an armed man who was wearing a mask and approaching her from the side of her Woodbridge house.

As with the Dale City shooting, the police ruled that the Thursday morning shooting in Woodbridge was justified based on self-defense after consulting with the Prince William County Commonwealth Attorney's Office. No charges will be filed against the woman, the police said.

In the July 6 shooting in Dale City, Prince William County police officers received a report of a shooting around 10 p.m.

When officers arrived on the scene, they said they found a 43-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. They then provided first aid until rescue personnel arrived, the police department said. The man is expected to survive.

Officers determined that the home's owner heard a loud noise at his front door and then saw someone trying to open a living room window. The homeowner then went outside, where he encountered an unknown man on the porch, police said.

After shooting the intruder, the homeowner contacted emergency personnel.
