5 Things: First Thursday, First Day of School, Sales Tax Holiday and More

The week ahead for July 29 and beyond in the Del Ray area.

Yes, it’s Monday. And yes, July is almost over, which means summer is moving much quicker than you ever imagined.

You have every reason to get down, so here are 5 Things to look forward to this week in Del Ray.

First ThursdayThe Del Ray Business Association presents its monthly summer street festival from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday along Mount Vernon Avenue. The theme of the event is “Did You Know?” and some Del Ray’s lesser-known businesses will be highlighted with booths and other fun stuff. It’s a free event, so bring the whole family.

First Day of School — Remember what I said about summer coming to an end? The kids at Mount Vernon Community School, which operates on a modified calendar, have their first day of classes on Thursday. Be mindful on your way to work that morning as kids stream down Mount Vernon Avenue carrying their new supplies and stories to tell.

Sales Tax Holiday — The Commonwealth of Virginia will hold its annual August sales tax holiday from Friday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 4. Qualifying school supplies selling for $20 or less per item and purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear selling for $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales taxes.

Soft Rock at the BirchmerePoco and Pure Prairie League stop by the Birchmere (3701 Mount Vernon Ave.) on Saturday for a double-bill that promises to feature mellow tunes like Crazy Love and Amie. Expect to see some bandanas and cowboy hats, too. Tickets are $35 (While enticing, I’m holding out for one of Kris Kristofferson’s shows next week at the Birchmere).

Open Mic Night — Signup sheet at St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub (2300 Mount Vernon Ave.) goes out at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. See what hidden talents your friends and neighbors will bring to the stage. Runs until 10 p.m.
