5 Things: National Hot Dog Day, Trivia, Royal Baby and a Corpse Flower

Your Tuesday in in the Del Ray area and more.

Happy Tuesday, Del Rayans! Or is it Del Raysins? Have we ever figured that one out?

Here are your five things for the day:

National Hot Dog Day — Today we celebrate hot dogs, which my father still eats cold and straight out of the package.

Hey, don’t knock it unless you’ve tried it. It’s a Hansen specialty, especially when Mom’s out of town.

If you’re looking some warm dogs of the gourmet variety, Cheesetique currently has the Hot Diggity Dog Duo on its menu. For $13, diners receive two all-beef, all-natural Fearless Franks, one smothered with Mac ’n Cheestique and the other topped with bleu cheese, Herbs de Provence and Dijon mustard. Comes with a side of potato salad, chips or greens.

7-Eleven is offering free hot dogs Tuesday through a free mobile app.

Trivia nightFireflies Restaurant (located at 1501 Mount Vernon Ave.) hosts its trivia night beginning at 8 p.m. Reservations are recommended and can be placed by calling 703-748-7200. We’re told hot dogs may also make an appearance.

Royal baby — The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed a baby boy Monday. We still don’t know its name. On Patch, we profiled a peculiar Alexandria connection: A new development planned for the corner of Royal and Princess streets in Old Town will be called "The Middleton" in honor of the Duchess.

Jack Lynch had the best comment on the Del Ray Patch Facebook page: “Apparently unaware of our Scottish heritage!”

The corpse flower is in bloom — Enjoy its stinky odor, which officials with the U.S. Botanic Garden have compared to smelling like “rotting flesh." To catch a glimpse and a whiff of the Titan Arum, visit today while it’s still in bloom. The U.S. Botanic Garden is located at 100 Maryland Ave., SW. The closest Metro stop is Federal Center SW.

Sit in on a discussion between area chefs — Learn about their kitchen training, inspiration and how they became part of the local food scene. The group features Kyle Bailey of Neighborhood Restaurant Group; Bertrand Chemel of 2941 Restaurant; Brian McBride of Marcel's; Andrew Markert of Beuchert’s Saloon; Todd Gray of Equinox; and Geoff Tracy of Chef Geoff’s; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. $45. Some proceeds from ticket sales benefit D.C. Central Kitchen and Nourish Now. The event is at the Howard Theatre, 620 T St., NW.
