Alexandria Man Dies While Swimming in Michigan Lake

Victim identified as a 58-year-old Alexandria resident.

An Alexandria man died Friday in a Michigan lake, according to The Washington Post.

The man’s name has not been released. He was 58 years old, according to the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office. The office’s dive team found the man’s body in about 50 feet of water in Long Lake, located in northwestern Michigan.

According to The Washington Post report, two men attempted to swim from an island in the lake to the mainland. One man made it to shore, while the other did not. At one point, the victim yelled to the survivor that he couldn’t make it all the way to the mainland and would turn back to the island.

The survivor told deputies he looked back, but lost sight of the man, according to WTOP. He assumed the man made it back to the island. 

A Long Lake Township resident informed police of the incident around 12:20 p.m. Friday, according to The Post.
