ALEXANDRIA, VA — Monday was supposed to be the day when everyone returned to work or school following the New Year's holiday, but Mother Nature had a different plan for our region.

A winter storm warning was issued by the National Weather Service, with much of the area expecting 5 to 10 inches of snow on the ground. According to preliminary snowfall totals from the National Weather Service, 10.7 inches was reported in southern Alexandria at 1:30 p.m. There were 10 inches recorded in the Lincolnia area and 9.7 inches and 9.2 inches in western Alexandria.

The storm forecast prompted Alexandria City Public Schools to close school buildings and switch to virtual learning. Federal offices in the Washington, D.C. area are closed, along with City of Alexandria government offices and many services.
