Fatal Crash With Metro Bus Kills Taxicab Driver In Fair Haven: Police

Fairfax County Police say a taxicab crash into a van caused a stopped Metrobus to also be struck.

GROVETON, VA — A fatal crash involving a Metrobus, van and taxicab was reported on Richmond Highway south of Alexandria City Monday morning, according to Fairfax County Police.

After 10 a.m. Monday, Fairfax County Police responded to calls about a three-vehicle crash in the 6300 block of Richmond Highway in Fair Haven. Capt. Jesse Katzman, a spokesperson for Fairfax County Police, said at an afternoon news briefing that a Metro bus was stopped behind traffic at a traffic light when a taxicab driver approached at a high rate of speed. The taxicab struck a van, which in turn hit the Metro bus.

The taxicab driver, an adult man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Katzman said two of the three van occupants have life-threatening injuries, and the other has non-life-threatening injuries.

The Metro bus had one driver and four riders but no reported injuries. According to Katzman, the bus was on the F1X express route between King Street-Old Town Metro and Fort Belvoir.

"Anytime we have loss of life it's extremely tragic, and in this case as you guys can see there is significant damage to both the van and to the taxi," said Katzman.

Fairfax County Police's Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash with support from Metro Transit Police and Metro. Police have video footage from the crash.
