Alexandria Turkey Trot Returns To Del Ray Neighborhood In 2023
A Thanksgiving morning tradition in Alexandria is the Turkey Trot, which draws participation from elite runners.
ALEXANDRIA, VA — Before families gather for their Thanksgiving feasts, elite runners and neighbors alike will get a workout in with the returning Alexandria Turkey Trot. The race in the Del Ray neighborhood is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 23 starting and ending at George Washington Middle School.
The 48th annual Alexandria Turkey Trot is a Thanksgiving morning tradition, drawing some of the East Coast's top elite runners and thousands for a five-mile flat course in the Del Ray neighborhood. Residents in the Del Ray neighborhood should expect temporary road closures on the course during the race from 9:15 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Participants with strollers and dogs can participate, but they must start in designated areas, and dogs must be on a short leash. Walkers are also welcome, but roads will only be closed to vehicular traffic from 9 a.m. to approximately 10:30 a.m. Participants on the course after the road opens are asked to move onto sidewalks. Rollerblades, skateboards and bicycles are not permitted.

After the race, an awards ceremony will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Awards will be given to the top three males and females, top three from each age group, first masters male and female, stroller champ, and doggy champ.
The event provides support to the nonprofit ALIVE, which provides food assistance and other resources to Alexandrians in need. Participants can make a contribution to ALIVE or bring two nonperishable food items to the George Washington Middle School gym on Nov. 23.
