First Thursday Redux, National Frozen Custard Day and Jazz

Plus, Del Ray Artisans and Adirondack folk.

There’s plenty to pick from today, Thursday, Aug. 8, in Del Ray, so let’s cut to the chase:

First Thursday (Again) —  The Del Ray Business Association presents its monthly summer street festival from 6 to 9 p.m. along Mount Vernon Avenue. The event was rescheduled because of rain last week. This month’s theme is “Did You Know?” and some Del Ray’s lesser-known businesses will be highlighted with booths and other fun stuff. It’s a free event, so bring the whole family.

The Mount Vernon Community School PTA is collecting art supplies, new and used books and gently warn children's clothing at the farmers market lot (Oxford and Mount Vernon avenues) throughout the evening.

Adirondack folk — Alex Smith and The River Brothers take the stage at FireFlies (1501 Mount Vernon Ave.) for a free show beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday. On tour from Upstate New York, the group will be sure to lift spirits—as bar patrons lift their spirits—with its Adirondack folk and Cape Breton fiddling.

National Frozen Custard Day — This holiday is celebrated today. I wonder where we Del Ray folks can celebrate? Anyone? Bueller?

Thursday Jazz — It’s Thursday, which means the Not-So-Modern Jazz Band will be performing at St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub (2300 Mount Vernon Ave.). The band, which has performed continuously since 1983, gets the party swinging at 7:30 p.m.

Anything Goes at Del Ray Artisans — The gallery (2704 Mount Vernon Ave.) recently opened its 10th annual board showcase, titled “Anything Goes.” Check it out from noon to 9 p.m. today for free.
