National Night Out, DIY Del Ray and a Root Beer Float

Plus, baseball and a country western legend.

As bad as Mondays can be, yesterday was downright beautiful outside—enough so that spirits were lifted all across Del Ray.

Let’s keep the momentum going with 5 Things for Tuesday, Aug. 6:

National Night Out — The Del Ray Citizens Association is hosting a National Night Out gathering from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the field next to Mount Vernon Recreation Center. More than 35 block parties are being held throughout the city as part of NNO (Check out the full list, including events hosted in Warwick Village, Hume Springs, Auburn Village and Lynhaven). Meet your neighbors, enjoy free food, music and games, and learn how you can get involved in your community and help make it safer.

Kris Kristofferson — The country western legend begins a two-night stand at The Birchmere this evening. Both shows are sold out, so it’s probably not the best thing to run in a list like this. But I have tickets, so I really just wanted to rub it in. Here’s a clip of him performing “Sunday Morning Coming Down” with the late, great Johnny Cash in 1976.

Del Ray resource — The fine folks at DIY Del Ray offered a nice walkthrough on accommodating a bunk bed in a space-challenged Del Ray bedroom yesterday. Make sure you follow Katie and Leslie on Twitter and Facebook

National Root Beer Float Day — Slowly pour some root beer over vanilla ice cream in a dish. Serve with a straw or a spoon. Doesn’t get more American than that. Where and how are you celebrating?

Baseball — The Alexandria Aces bowed out of the playoffs on Friday, putting an end to the best season in franchise history. If you’re looking for some baseball, the Washington Nationals play host to the Atlanta Braves at Nationals Park, 7:05 p.m. The park is about a 35-minute bike ride from Del Ray.
