WASHINGTON, DC — Make sure to pack umbrellas with your 4th of July picnics as rain will be possible at times during the Independence Day weekend in the Northern Virginia and Washington region, according to early weather forecasts.

AccuWeather forecasters expected moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico will create a chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms during the holiday weekend. Chances of rain will appear Saturday, Sunday and Monday in the District of Columbia.

"From portions of Arizona and Utah and all the way to the southern Atlantic and mid-Atlantic coasts, enough moisture will be present in the atmosphere for the risk of not only pop-up afternoon and evening thunderstorms each day, but also the potential for multiple downpours and thunderstorms on more than one of the three days of the weekend," AccuWeather reported in its 4th of July weekend forecast.

Rain may dampen holiday weekend plans, but AccuWeather and The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang do not expect a "washout" of consistent rain throughout the weekend. Capital Weather Gang forecasters expected Saturday to be partly sunny, Sunday to be cloudy and 4th of July Monday to be partly sunny. Nevertheless, a cold front created the chance for showers and thunderstorms during the weekend in the Washington region, according to forecasters.

Here is the Washington forecast from the National Weather Service.
