Retired Sheriff Dana Lawhorne and retired Alexandria City High School Principal John Porter were selected to lead the Thanksgiving race.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Retired Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne and retired Alexandria City High School Principal John Porter have been chosen as grand marshals of the 2023 Alexandria Turkey Trot, the Del Ray Business Association announced.
"It is an honor to announce that two of Alexandria's most loved community members, Dana Lawhorne and John Porter, are this year's Grand Marshals," said Del Ray Business Association board member Gayle Reuter. "Both are lifelong Alexandrians who have dedicated their lives to public service."
Lawhorne retired as the Sheriff of Alexandria after serving more than 43 years in law enforcement, including 16 years as sheriff and 27 years with the Alexandria Police Department. Porter served over 40 years in schools, including 22 years as principal of Alexandria City High School and roles like teacher and assistant principal. Both are longtime supporters of the Alexandria Turkey Trot, as Porter has participated in most since the race began 48 years ago. Lawhorne has made it a tradition with his family and neighbors to cheer on runners.
