The plaza is named for Capt. Humbert Rocky Versace, a posthumous Medal of Honor recipient from Alexandria. Versace was honored for his valor during his time as a Prisoner of War before his execution by the Viet Cong. Versace posthumously received the Medal of Honor in 2002 several days after Alexandria's Captain Rocky Versace Plaza and Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated.

Another Veterans Day recognition near Alexandria will be Mount Vernon Salutes Veterans. On Saturday, Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., George Washington's Mount Vernon will offer free admission to active duty, former, or retired military personnel. Veterans may place a floral tribute at the Washington Tomb, enjoy musical performances and more during the Veterans Day event.
