What's Open, Closed For Thanksgiving 2023 In Alexandria
The Thanksgiving holiday and Black Friday will bring closures and schedule changes around Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — If you're planning any errands or outings in between your Thanksgiving feasts, be sure you know the openings and closings in Alexandria.
City government, schools and other services will be closed on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 23 as well as Black Friday, Nov. 24. Services like transit and trash collection will be open with modified schedules.
One returning Thanksgiving tradition is the Alexandria Turkey Trot, a five-mile race in the Del Ray neighborhood drawing elite runners and thousands of participants. It will start at 9 a.m. at George Washington Middle School, ending at the same location. The event benefits ALIVE, which provides food and other assistance to Alexandrians in need. Below are the openings and closures to know for the Thanksgiving holiday in Alexandria:
City of Alexandria government offices: Closed Nov. 23 and 24.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Closed Nov. 22 to 24.
Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: Closed on Nov. 23. Normal operations return on Nov. 24 with adoptions beginning at 12 p.m. For an animal emergency or wildlife concern, call 703-746-4444.
Courts: Commonwealth of Virginia courts in Alexandria will close at noon on Nov. 22 and be closed Nov. 23 and 24, including Alexandria Circuit Court, Clerk of Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and Court Service Unit.
DASH Bus: On Nov. 23, DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule, and the Alexandria Transit Company administrative office will be closed Nov. 23 and 24. On Nov. 24, DASH will have normal service. The free King Street Trolley operates from King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square with service every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day. Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles: Closed Nov. 23 to 25.
Health department: The Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center at Alexandria City High School will be closed Nov. 22 to 24.
Historic Alexandria museums: All city museums are closed on Nov. 23. On Nov. 24, the Alexandria Black History Museum will be closed, and all other museums will be open. For more information, visit alexandriava.gov/Historic.
Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the Child Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5800; the Domestic Violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the Adult Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5778 or 988; and the Sexual Assault Hotline at 703-683-7273.
Impound lot: Closed on Nov. 23 and 24. The city’s impound lot is closed on all weekends and observed city holidays. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.
Libraries: Alexandria Library locations will be closed on Nov. 23 and 24.
Metro: Metrorail will run on a Sunday holiday schedule from 7 a.m. to midnight on Nov. 23 and a Friday schedule from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Nov. 24. Metrobus will run on a Sunday schedule on Nov. 23 and Friday schedule on Nov. 24. For more information, visit https://www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables.
Parking: On Nov. 23, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any normally prohibited location. Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced. Regular parking restrictions will be in place on Nov. 24.
Post offices: Closed on Nov. 23.
Recreation, nature, and art centers: On Nov. 23, all City of Alexandria recreation, nature, and art centers will be closed. On Nov. 24, Chinquapin Park Recreation Center, and Aquatics Facility, Charles Houston Recreation Center and Patrick Henry Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All other facilities will be closed. For more information, visit alexandriava.gov/RecreationCenters. The Torpedo Factory Art Center is closed Nov. 23 and open on Nov. 24.
Trash and recycling: Residential refuse, recycling, and yard waste will be collected on the regularly scheduled day during the week of Nov. 20. Trash pickup will begin at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 23. Curbside food waste will be delayed by one day. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be open on Saturday, Nov. 25.
Virginia Railway Express: There is no VRE service on Nov. 23, and there will be an "S" schedule on Nov. 24. For more information, visit www.vre.org.
