ALEXANDRIA, VA — The first full week of January brought two winter storms to Alexandria, the first of which caused power outages, hazardous road conditions and closures. Monday's storm was more significant than the few inches that fell overnight into Friday, but both combined exceed last winter season's total snowfall.

Monday's storm alone brought between 7.5 inches and 10 inches in different parts of Alexandria, according to National Weather Service preliminary snowfall totals. Friday's storm was less significant but still brought over 2 inches to different parts of Alexandria. Monday's accumulation (with or without Friday's accumulation) outpaces the 5.4 inches of total accumulation during the 2020-2021 winter season in Washington, DC.

The last time DC had this much monthly snow was 11.5 inches in January 2019. Most of that can be credited to a Jan. 14 2019 snowstorm that brought between a varying 6 to 12 inches in the DC region, according to the Washington Post.

Progress on clearing Alexandria roads is happening more quickly than Monday's storm due to less snowfall and crews pretreating bridges, overpasses and elevated structures on snow emergency routes. The City of Alexandria is responsible for clearing its roads, starting with snow emergency routes, followed by secondary routes, intermediate routes and residential streets. According to the SnowReport tracking system, the city's major routes are clear, and various residential streets are considered "passable."

Friday's storm is expected to be declared a Level 1 storm. Under the city's snow removal ordinance, property owners, occupants, community associations or businesses are responsible for clearing their sidewalks, driveways and entrances. A Level 1 storm means sidewalks must be cleared 24 hours after the snow stopped, or 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8.

Although this week's snowfall has concluded, residents are urged to prepare for icy road conditions Friday night.
