Deaths of Retired K-9 Officers 'Niko' and 'Kona' Mourned

The two police dogs, Niko, 9, and Kona, 18, were once part of the Fairfax City Police Department. They died within a day of each other.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA -- Police are mourning the deaths of two retired K9s that once worked alongside police officers in Fairfax City. The two retired dogs died one day apart last week, a police department spokeswoman said.

Niko, a 9-year old German Shepherd, died last Monday. Another dog, Kona, a Belgian Malinois, lived to the ripe old age of 18, died last Tuesday.

Niko served the City of Fairfax from 2007-2015. Kona served the City from 2003 to 2008.

Throughout their distinguished careers, the dogs assisted many local jurisdictions to include the Fairfax County PD, the Virginia State Police, the Town of Vienna PD and the George Mason University PD, according to police.

The dogs were always a hit at various tours and demonstrations, to include the City's Citizens Police Academy, the department said.
