VDOT To Demolish And Remove Gallows Road Bridge Over I-66 East Nightly Next Week

Drivers on I-66 East In Fairfax County can expect delays and road closures overnight next week as VDOT crews remove the Gallows Road Bridge.

FAIRFAX, VA — Drivers who will be traveling eastbound on I-66 outside the Beltway at night next may encounter delays and lane closures due to the demolition and removal of the Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 East.

VDOT crews will conduct the demotion and removal process during overnight hours from Sunday, Jan. 9 through Sunday, Jan. 16.

Here are the details about lane closures and delays expected to occur next week:

  • VDOT crews will demolish a portion of the old concrete deck bridge deck during the day starting Sunday, with removal occurring at night.
  • Three lanes of eastbound I-66 will be closed nightly from 10 p.m.-5 a.m. on Sunday-Thursday, and 11 p.m.-7 a.m., Friday-Saturday.
  • Drivers will experience periodic traffic stoppages of up to 20 minutes Sunday through Thursday between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., and Friday and Saturday between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • All lanes will reopen to traffic by 5 a.m. on weekdays and by 7 a.m. on weekends.

The removal of the bridge is part of the ongoing Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. VDOT has already removed the old bridge over I-66 West and the Dunn Loring Metro station. This includes the bridge abutment along I-66 West and the old bridge piers.
