Fairfax City, Virginia Proclaims April 21-28 As Int'l Dark Sky Week
Local Nonprofit, Dark Sky Friends Supports Light Pollution Prevention

The City of Fairfax, Virginia, officially proclaimed April 21 to 28, 2025, as International Dark Sky Week. They join a global movement to raise awareness about the importance of dark skies and the detrimental effects of light pollution, acknowledging the city’s commitment to responsible lighting practices and environmental sustainability. "We are thrilled to have Fairfax, Virginia join our global community in celebrating International Dark Sky Week," said Eileen Kragie, founder/president of Dark Sky Friends. "Protecting our dark skies is not only crucial for the environment but also for the health and well-being of our residents. By reducing light pollution, we can enhance our quality of life and preserve the wonder of the night sky for nature, wildlife and future generations," said Kragie.
The proclamation emphasizes the adverse effects of light pollution, including sleep deprivation and the loss of the natural night sky’s beauty and wonder. It encourages residents to participate in International Dark Sky Week by:
