Fairfax County Schools Make Weather Decision For Tuesday

Fairfax County Public Schools have made a decision about Tuesday classes due to the winter storm that's blanketed Northern Virginia in snow.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Fairfax County Public School students will have an additional day of extending their winter break

FCPS has decided to close all schools and central offices on Tuesday due to the Monday's winter storm.

Snow totals in Fairfax County as of midday Monday ranged from 6 inches in Reston and Herndon to 8 inches in Hybla Valley, 6.5 inches in Vienna, and 5.2 inches in Falls Church, the National Weather Service said.

These activities in schools and on school grounds are canceled:

  • extracurricular activities
  • interscholastic contests
  • team practices
  • field trips
  • middle school after-school programs
  • professional learning and training courses
  • recreation programs and community use by outside groups not affiliated with FCPS
  • Adult and Community Education (ACE) classes.
  • Adult High School and GED
  • School Age Child Care (SACC) centers are closed

"Homebound and home-based instruction are canceled. Employees designated as essential personnel shall follow supervisor direction," according to FCPS. "Emergency administrative leave is authorized for all other personnel."

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday throughout Northern Virginia and other parts of the region. Total snow accumulations between 5 and 10 inches are predicted, but isolated areas could get up to 12 inches if heavy banding forms, according to the National Weather Service. A trace of ice is forecast with the snow.
