Fairfax Florist to Donate Proceeds from Prom Flowers to Charity

It's prom weekend for many schools like our own Fairfax High, and that means florists are working overtime to make enough corsages and boutonnieres to meet demand.

But, at the 1-800-FLOWERS store in Fairfax, they are keeping it all in perspective by donating $1 from every bouttoniere and corsage to charity.

The store's charity of choice this season is Pencils of Promise.

 "Pencils of Promise helps children in the developing world gain access to quality education," Kailey Ruszkowski, a representative for the store, told Patch.

The organization helps build schools in underdeveloped countries such as Ghana, according to its website.

Inside the shop, located at 9579 Braddock Road in Fairfax, when shoppers mention Pencils of Promise, $1 from every bouttoniere and $2 from every corsage will go to the charity.

Ruszkowski said, 1-800-FLOWER shops from across the country are getting involved as well. When a shopper accesses the special "Pencils of Promise prom collection" on the store's website and shops online, 20 percent of net sales will go to the charity as well.

Ruszkowski said, the shop in Fairfax can provide simple designs for the bouttonieres, or even get creative by adding jewels, rhinestones, feathers, multi-colored flowers and more.
