FAIRFAX CITY, VA — A 33-year-old Falls Church man arrested on Friday by City of Fairfax Police for taking items from a local grocery store was wanted on a warrant for missing a May 27 hearing in Alexandria, according to court records.

Officers responded around 1:24 p.m. on Friday for the report of larceny at the Safeway at 10350 Willard Way. Searching the area, the officers located a suspect, whom they identified as Omar Elbasir, according to the police report.

During their investigation, the officers discovered that Elbasir was wanted out of the City of Alexandria for failing to appear for a scheduled hearing, according to police. Elbasir was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he was charged with petit larceny and served with his warrant from Alexandria. He was then held on a secured bond.

Elbasir was arraigned on April 23 in Alexandria General District Court. When he didn’t show up for a May 27 preliminary hearing, the judge issued a warrant for failure to appear, another Class 1 felony, according to court records.

Elbasir is due back in Fairfax City General District Court on Sept. 11, to face the petit larceny charge in stemming from last Friday’s incident at Safeway.

Previously, Elbasir did have a June 6 hearing scheduled in Fairfax City General District Court on misdemeanor charges of petit larceny and intoxication in public, but the prosecutor declined to prosecute, according to court records.
