Hy-Way Motel Demolition Clears Way For Low-Income Housing Project
Wesley Housing and The Lamb Center began demolishing the Hy-Way Motel on Fairfax Boulevard on Monday as part of the Beacon Landing project.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — On Monday, an excavator began the demolition of the Hy-Way Motel at 9640 Fairfax Blvd. Expected to last two weeks, the demolition is the first step in the construction of a new permanent supportive housing facility by The Lamb Center and Wesley Housing.
“Demolition marks a significant milestone in moving towards the construction of Beacon Landing, a five-story residential/mixed-use community with 54 apartments for individuals transitioning from chronic homelessness,” according to a Lamb Center release. “Once built, Beacon Landing will become the largest permanent supportive housing (PSH) development in Northern Virginia. The development will provide homes to individuals with disabilities and very low incomes, at or below 30 percent of the Area Median Income ($32,500 for a single person, HUD 2024).”
On Feb. 14, 2023, the Fairfax City Council voted unanimously to approve a $700,000 appropriation to help fund the redevelopment of the Hy-Way Motel property on Fairfax Boulevard for permanent, supportive, low-income housing. This came about two months after the council approved the project at its Dec. 18, 2022 meeting.
