Independence Day Detours

Activities shut down streets in Fairfax City.

Fairfax City has a lot planned for the fourth. Note these detours and delays in Old Town before getting behind the wheel.

Main Street, University Drive, Chain Bridge Road, George Mason Boulevard

  • Vehicles and pedestrians traveling on Route 236/Main Street will be detoured to North Street from 8 a.m. until after the Independence Day Parade (around noon). 
  • The parade will also affect portions of University Drive, George Mason Boulevard and Route 123/Chain Bridge Road traffic also will be rerouted at that time.
  • Parking will be restricted on these roads.

University Drive

  • The street will close from Sager Avenue to Armstrong Street from about noon to 5 p.m. for the Old Fashioned Fireman's Day at Fire Station 3.

Old Lee Highway

  • No through-traffic will be permitted from about 9:15-11 p.m. on Old Lee Highway to allow motorists to leave the Fairfax High School area after the fireworks.
  • These detours will be in effect Tuesday if the fireworks are postponed.
