Mercedes Stalls in Flash Flood on Lawyers Road

Intersection of Hunter Mill Road, Lawyers Road is flooded.

Will Green thought if the cars in front of him could get through the flash flood near the intersection of Hunter Mill Road and Lawyers Road Wednesday afternoon, his all-wheel drive Mercedes certainly could.

"Next thing I knew, water was gushing over the hood and stalled my car," said Green, 38, of Falls Church. "I definitely got scared when it was happening because water immediately started coming through the floorboards. That's how deep it was."

Once Green knew his car was no longer moving, he forced his way out of his car, waded through the water and waited for rescue vehicles to come, which they did thanks to a Good Samaritan who helped him put in the call.

"I had no phone. I had just given an exit interview and turned in my cell phone," Green said. "I was on my way to get an iPhone, so of course this happened."

Green predicted the incident took close to two hours to clean up. Around 4:30 p.m., Green's car was being towed and traffic could move freely through area.

"But cars definitely went by me and through the water even after I stalled. It was probably about 50 cars that passed by me and only three cars stopped, and one was my friend," Green said. "I was surprised so many people passed by without offering help, but everything's fine. I'm OK."

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue officials have not yet responded to a request for comment.
