State Sen. Saddam Salim (D-37) released this statement following the Sept. 8 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court's on Noem v. Vasquez Perdomo.

FAIRFAX, VA — Like so many in our immigrant communities, I am deeply troubled by yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling that lifts protections against racial profiling in immigration enforcement. This decision, issued without full arguments or hearings, undermines the basic constitutional rights that should protect every person in this country regardless of how they look, speak, or where they come from.

As an immigrant myself, I know the fear this ruling creates for families who are simply trying to live, work, and contribute to their communities. Since Mr. Trump took office, I have heard from many immigrant constituents who share these same fears for the safety and future of
their families. Their concerns remind us that this ruling is not just a matter of legal precedent, but of daily lived reality for thousands of our neighbors.

In Virginia, I want our immigrant neighbors to hear this clearly: you belong here, and your dignity matters. No court decision can erase your humanity, your rights, or the contributions you make to our Commonwealth.

I will continue to work alongside my colleagues, advocates, and community leaders to ensure Virginia remains a place of safety, fairness, and opportunity. Together, we will resist policies that promote fear and division, and instead invest in the protections and trust every
community deserves.
