Police: Lock Doors, Put Away Belongings, Get a Security Survey
Fairfax City officers offer home security tips to deter crime.

Remember to put away your belongings and lock your doors and windows to deter criminals from targeting your home.
Fairfax City Police asks the community to take the time to check windows and doors to make sure that they are locked, leave a light on to help illuminate the inside of the house and if equipped, ensure that all alarms are activated.

- Eliminate or cut back bushes and trees which are situated close to the house.
- Check exterior lights to make sure that bulbs have not burned out.
- Pick up mail and newspapers so as not to give the impression that someone is not home.
- Store personal belongings which are kept inside should be stored in places that cannot easily be seen.
- Secure items normally kept outside in sheds and carports.
City residents can call police at 703-385-7966 to schedule a home security survey. The department's community services staff will send someone out to evaluate the home and make suggestions on how to take more preventative crime measures.
