Red Light Cams Coming to North and University, Fairfax Boulevard at Circle
Violators get warnings in July, fines in August.
Friday marks the start of a new campaign to cut down careless driving in Fairfax City with the installation of red light cameras at two notorious intersections.
The cameras will capture drivers who run red lights at the North Street and University Drive intersection, and Fairfax Boulevard at Fairfax Circle. These cameras will watch both eastbound and westbound traffic.
"They are some of our more busier intersections," said Sgt. Dan Grimm of the Fairfax City Police Department. The department's traffic division selected the two intersections based on their penchant for automobile accidents.

Starting July 1, the registered owners of vehicles caught in the act will receive warnings. Police intend to move on to citations, $50 fines, on August 1. Drivers can pre-pay the fine online or contest it in city traffic court.
Each citation will include a unique PIN number and directions to review the photo and video evidence online. All evidence will be reviewed by at least more than one police officer before sending the notice.

Citations are issued to the registered owner of the vehicle. If the registered owner was not driving the vehicle, they may sign a sworn affidavit stating they were not driving the vehicle, and the citation will be nullified, according to police.
