Virginia Mayor to Resign After Meth-for-Sex Charges
Fairfax City Mayor Scott Silverthorne will step down later this week after arrest Thursday in a sting at a Tysons Corner hotel.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Fairfax City Mayor Scott Silverthorne has announced he will resign from office later this week. Silverthorne was arrested Thursday on charges that he offered undercover detectives meth in exchange for sex at a Tysons Corner hotel.
Silverthorne's resignation will be effective Thursday, Aug. 11, according to a city release. The City Council has also scheduled a special meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Councilmember Jeffrey Greenfield is serving as acting mayor since Silverthorne's arrest on charges of felony distribution of methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to investigators, Silverthorne allegedly offered the meth in exchange for what he believed would be a group sexual encounter Thursday night.

Silverthorne, 50, was reelected in May. A profile in The Washington Post at the time noted Silverthorne had overcome a tough year after losing his job in 2015 and a bout with a nonlethal form of cancer, squamous cell carcinoma.
“My faith in God and myself will get me through the biggest challenge of my life. I ask that people keep me in their prayers," Silverthorne told NBC4.
