Severe Thunderstorms, Large Hail Likely Along I-66/ US-50 In NoVA

Scattered severe thunderstorms are likely Monday afternoon, bringing damaging winds and half-dollar size hail, according to reports

VIRGINIA — Scattered severe thunderstorms are likely Monday afternoon along and south of I-66/US-50, according to the National Weather Service.

A sever thunderstorm watch was in effect until 10 p.m. on Monday for Washington, D.C. and the following areas in Northern Virginia: the cities of Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, Manassas and Manassas Park, and Arlington, Culpeper, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties.

Major threats from the storms include large hail, damaging wind and lighting strikes. The Fredericksburg area to far southern Maryland will most likely see the strongest storms, according to NWS.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued until 2 p.m. for Frederick and Clarke counties and the City of Winchester. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph and half-dollar size hail could accompany the storm that is moving east at 35 mph, according to the NWS forecast.

"Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall," the forecast said. "This could injure those outdoors, as well as damage homes and vehicles. Roadways may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles."

In the Baltimore-Washington region, showers and thunderstorms are likely between 2 p.m. and before 8 p.m. on Monday, with the possibility of large hail, damage winds and frequent lightning, according to the NWS forecast. Otherwise, the day will be mostly sunny, with a high near 86.

Here is the National Weather Service forecast for Northern Virginia for the week:

Tuesday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Light and variable wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.

Tuesday Night - A chance of showers after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 54. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday - A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 5pm. Cloudy, with a high near 66. East wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Wednesday Night - Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 56. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Thursday - Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8am, then a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 68. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Thursday Night - Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50.

Friday - Mostly cloudy, with a high near 68.

Friday Night - A chance of showers after 8pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Saturday - A chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 72. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday Night - A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 48. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Sunday -Partly sunny, with a high near 60.
