Silverthorne Arrest: Greenfield Appointed Acting Mayor

Mayor Scott Silverthorne was arrested after allegedly offering meth in exchange for sex with an undercover officer.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — An acting mayor has been appointed after the Thursday night arrest of Mayor Scott Silverthorne, according to a statement by the City of Fairfax.

Silverthorne, 50, has been charged with felony distribution of methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia in an alleged attempt to exchange drugs for sex with undercover detectives at a Tysons Corner hotel, according to Fairfax County Police.

Following city code, council member Jeffrey Greenfield will serve as acting mayor effective immediately. The city made the announcement in a statement Friday morning.

Greenfield issued a statement later in the day, noting the city would not be commenting on Silverthorne's case.

"The City of Fairfax City Council appreciates Mr. Silverthorne’s longstanding dedication to the community," Greenfield said. "He has served the City of Fairfax as a Councilmember and Mayor for more than a quarter of a century. The community has benefitted from his dedication and his vision for making Fairfax an excellent place to live and work."

The day-to-day operations of the city are handled by City Manager Bob Sisson and will not be impacted by the arrest, according to the city statement.

The mayor and council are not expected to meet again until September.
