Trick-or-Treat With the City of Fairfax! Before you head out to go door-to-door this Thursday night for Halloween, stop by and visit members of the City for some treats! From 2 to 4 p.m., locals are invited to trick-or-treat at three locations: City Hall at 10455 Armstrong St., the Fairfax Museum and Visitors Center at 10209 Main St., and Historic Blenheim at 3610 Old Lee Highway. Wear your best costume!
Do You Think School Start Times Should Be Later? Parents in the Frost/Woodson school pyramid are invited to a discussion featuring Braddock District School Board Member Megan McLaughlin and health and policy expert
Judith Owens, an internationally-recognized authority on pediatric sleep from Children's National Medical Center (CNMC), on how sleep affects school-aged children and whether school start times should be changed, possibly as early as next year. Parents are invited to share their thoughts and ask questions. This Monday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m., in the Frost Middle School Cafeteria, 4101 Pickett Road, Fairfax.
Irish Social Dance Classes: A great form of exercise, and lots of fun too! Join others to learn Irish social dances. This group organizes lessons and social dance parties, through the City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department. The next event is this Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7:15 p.m. at the Green Acres community center, 4401 Sideburn Road, Fairfax. For more information, e-mail ceilidance@yahoo.com.
Fairfax Bike Summit: Are you a cyclist that is passionate about finding a way for bicyclists and motorists to co-exist peacefully? Interested in being a part of the conversation about the role of bicycling in the transformation of local neighborhoods and developments into livable, walkable, and sustainable communities, particularly with the Silver Line coming? Come to the Fairfax Bike Summit at George Mason University this Saturday, Nov. 2. $25 in advance, $30 the day of. Register here.
Senator Rand Paul and Ken Cuccinelli in Fairfax: Limited free tickets are available for the Get Out the Vote rally with Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Republican gubernatorial candidate and attorney general Ken Cuccinelli on Monday from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Waterford, 12025 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway in the Fair Lakes area of Fairfax. Those interested in attending the rally should RSVP through Cuccinelli's website.
AAUW Book & Author Luncheon: Join theFairfax City branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) for a luncheon to raise money for scholarships for local young women. Several area authors will be the special guests and will autograph copies of their books. The authors are: Sarah Blake,The Postmistress; Sharon Chang, Escaped Alone: A Memoir of an Incomplete Southerner; Karin Tanabe, The List; Ellen Crosby, Multiple
Exposure; and Jefferson Morley, Snow-Storm in August: Washington City,
Francis Scott Key, and the Forgotten Race Riot of 1835. Cost is $40 and includes lunch. Reservations must be made by Wednesday, Oct. 30. The event is this Saturday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. at Country Club of Fairfax, 5001 Ox Road, Fairfax.
